sean ritchie   13/Nov/2001:18:37:18
I am sixteen and my grey 84 rabbit is my first car. The stock 1.7L has
seen better days, but I am in the process of rebuilding a 86 gti, 10:1
engine code RD, in my shop class in highschool. It will be complete
with audi 5000 throttle body, ported intake, pocket ported head, fresh
valve grind, ported exhast with dual output manifold and no cat. I also
wired in a Knock sensor and fitted an instriment cluster from an 85 gti.
I have neuspeed lowering springs(bought for $40 unused)and kyb gas-
adjust shocks that are waiting on a pair of bilstient sport struts for
the front. I am working on figuring out how to take off the core
support and fenders from my 77 rabbit(parts car) so I can weld it to my
front end and mount a 4 round h4 grill and bumpers. I am also
interested in Knowing if I can use late 80s cabriolet bumpers, fender
flares, and ground effects without to much engineering. If anyone has
done any of these mods or can offer some insight please email me. thanks

I never knew that there where so many people that loved their rabbit
like I love my 1981 Rabbit 4 Speed. I love to sit back and lock the
parking break, pop the clutch, and roast the tires for about 10 seconds.
I like making people look stupid. I make fun of those people that think
their 2.8 S-10 will get even close to beating me. I've never lost a race
I have been challenged to. The only problem is I need a new paint job.
The orriginal Bonze paint job is getting a little old and I was thinking
Emerald Green with gold flake. What do you guys/ladies think.

Jason   28/Oct/2001:20:00:47

Matthew Angell   25/Oct/2001:13:02:21
I have a 1980 VW Rabbit GTI. I can't find to much info on how much
horse power it has, all i know is it is a 16 valve. It used to have a
five speed tranny in it but previous owner blew the transmission and
put a little four speed in. If i could have someone e-mail if they
know anything further about my car. Thanx

Hi Allan,
Your site is great and full of nice Rabbit. I'm probably one of the
last Rabbit GTI 1980 's owner in Quebec. My GTI 80 is original like
in 1980 except the wheels: Allow wheel of GTI 1984 (14").

Antoine

P.S. Excuse my poor english, but it is not my first language. Tanks!

This site rules! A little more RAbbit GTI's and Rabbit Pick-ups
(Caddys) and it would be the best site on this planet. VW's rock and
RAbbits do to!

HELP!!HELP!!HELP!! 2 days ago some old dude in a Ford Taurus turned in
front of me and my BEAUTIFUL '82 Rabbit. Needless to say I nailed the
HELL out of that DAMN Ford and now my front right corner is crushed
under and pinched all the way to the right tire. I am in desperate need
of a Rabbit Diesel. Must have good body. If it doesn't run, that's
GREAT!! I am looking to take my new diesel engine and drop it into a
new rabbit diesel body. Mine was a 1982 Rabbit diesel LS, 4dr with a
sunroof. If you have one of those that doesn't run, it would be my
pleasure to buy it off of you. I'm in Seattle, Washington. Please E-
mail me soon if you have what I'm looking for.
THIS WEBSITE ROCKS!!

RABBITS ARE THE SHIT!!!

Dude where's my car?   29/Sep/2001:04:45:12
I live in the mid west and there are no hills or very many corners for
that matter. My car might seem like a cool car if I lived somewhere
else, like maybe somewhere with traffic lights and winding roads.
I don't get any action with none of the women out here in Kansas, not
even the lot lizzards give me any play. No woman wants to ride in
my "Japanese tin can....sheeeit!" no one believes me when I tell them
it's a german car. I was given the car when my cousin Jethro died from
a gas fume overdose, those are common over in these here parts.
Any way I guess I'll just run it over with my dad's Ford F350 dually
quad cab 4wheel drive gun rack camper special. Turn it into a chicken
coup. Damn hippies!

Hey Love your site!!

My 1981 Rabbit S, love it wouldn't trade it for anything, have
a 1.7l block, new rings and bearings, balanced and blueprinted, 1.8l
head, ported and pollished, bigger valves, triple valve springs, the
head has been shaved, Shrick 268 cam, intake manifold has been port
matched, audi 5000 TB, big bore intake, MSD ignition (coil and igntion
system), 100 shot NOS, deisel tranny (racing gears rebuilt by C-&-S),
sachs clutch, short shift kit, 2 1/2" exhaust, with Borla muffler,
Monza tip, and stock crappy paint. It goes pretty quick, I want to
turbo it, but I have no money left. Does anyone have any suggestions,
for how I can get every bit of power, for pretty cheap. But keeping it
naturally aspirated? THANK YOU
You can e-mail me: canadian_guy09@hotmail.com

I am retired military (USAF 1972 - 1994), bought a 1983 VW Rabbit
Turbo Diesel (have all of the paperwork she was the original owner)
in 1989, off of a friend who brought it back from Germany ( it now has
172,000 miles on it). Haven't seen a rabbit turbo diesel on this side
of the water. Is this a rare car? Needs to be totally restored, live
in New Orleans, Louisiana, any suggestions.

totonka   17/Aug/2001:00:01:47
I currently have an 81 rabbit diesel it was a free car the only problem
with it is the body is bad runs like a top with way over 200,000 miles
on it the odometer busted at 209k and my buddy drove it alot. This may
seem strange used to put on an average of 300 miles per week minimum on
my other car 93 camry wagon and fill up once a week.....I put in ten
gallons (in a 20 gallon tank) into the rabbit and it took me a month to
use it up!! My driving habits actually got worse cause im trying to
drive a ton just to see if the needle will ever go down a noticeable
ammount in a week!!

I know this is long winded. Does anyone know how safe rabbits are in
crashes? My guess is not but I dont care I'm try ing to convince my
wife to let me get a nice rabbit body for my motor. Or a jetta if that
will hold the motor.

If anyone has that info or a car to sell e-mail me @

Doug   26/Jul/2001:10:10:57
HI fellow Diesel owners, Thought this might of interest: Diesel fuel
has been low in sulfur due to the EPA on engine emmissions. This sulfur
had lubricating properties that the fuel injection pump needed. The
pump, without this lube, wears out its pulley shaft bearing surface in
a oval shape causing fuel leaks and ,in my rabbit"s case, air to get
into the pump when the engine was not running .This air would cause the
fuel to drain from the pump back to the fuel tank there by making long
cranking time to start the engine. Fix: I installed a small check
valve in the fuel line between the filter and injhection pump.To still
prolong whats left in the pump life, add to the fuel a small amo9unt of
2 cycle oil , apprpox 1 cup per tank full. It also inproved my low end
torque. It must improve the lubricating of the ring/cyclinder wall
surfaces.I have 200,000 + mileage as that I put on as purchaced new. By
the way , the way to keep it running a long time is to keep your RPM"s
low. " Do it

I like your web site. I am a fellow Canadian, I am the service manager
at a vw store in south western Ontario. I have been repairing vw's for
15 years. My favourite project was a 1979 rabbit gas ground up
restoration (destroyed in a car accident). I am currently working on a
1981 rabbit p/u restoration, and conversion to german style a1 body. I
have saved your web site in my favourites and will come back often. I
hope you are driving your dream soon. Take care. Sean.

Hey Buddy,
i was checking your web pages and then to the guest book. I
see this site has very interesting and informatic to others. I
congradulate you on such an achievement. Reading the stories in this
guest book left me in content. I wonder now will there be any others
(web sites) you will create, i wouldn't mind checking into a golf or
jetta or even passat. There is no rush, not many people have the time
and patience. Congradulations on a job well done.

Hi i am from SOUTH AFRICA,and i did not even know that the (citi golf)
thats what we call the cars here, are called Rabbits in the US.

I found it quite strange, that i was acually looking for the animal
rabbits site and found yours just as interesting, because my girlfriend
has a vw citi golf (chico)1.3 1999 model white in color. She is mad
about the ainimal rabbits(the white ones acually).I made stickers of
the rabbits(animal ones)and stuck them on the car,and i did not even
know that the car is called a rabbit.

The people here in SA dont even know that the golk mk1 is called the
rabbit, and the people tend to find the rabbit stickers very strange on
the car,but now i find them quite ironnic because the the car is called
a rabbit.

The site is wonderfull, and here in SA rabbit is the most popular car no
the road!Long live the rabbit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cool site. I have a 79 rabbit road race car with a 2.0l 16v engine.
Fully ported and polished head with custom ground cams, 13.5 to 1 JE
pistons. Way too many other mods to list here. Its pretty quick, Ive
managed to beat a porsche 911 and 928 with it, even though they are stii
way faster than me in a straight. Must be cause rabbits are such easy
cars to drive fast!

i recently bought a 1978 vw rabbit diesel 4 speed. the body was recently
refinished and the interior is currently undergoing restoration. i
placed 15" crome five spokes from american racing on it and installed a
kenwood steroa system. it has round headlights which set off the front
of the car quite well. further modifcations are in the works for summer
2001.

I own a 83 Rabbit L I coverted to a GTI. I lowered it and put in
adjustable struts. Then install a 16V engine. Hold on cause it flys.
Oh yeah.......I race it on a 1/4 mile dirt oval.

Brett   01/Jun/2001:21:53:22
Hey love the site!!! I own 3 rabbits and a cabriolet myself and i never
knew what i was getting myself into when i got into the damn little
things. Now im addicted to them, my latest project rabbit is a 78 coupe
with just about the barest 1.6 litre you can get. power nothing...no
power brakes, steering, windows, horsepower, torque, no power at all.
But the little things are damn fun to drive and they handle like a
dream. My little rabbit may not be able to keep up with a tricycle up a
hill but it will out corner a mustang down that same hill!!!
great site and keep up with the killer A1 rabbit and golf pics! Laterz

I own a 1980 and a 1984 rabbit. cops like to pull my rabbits over.
I work a lot on my cars, but they are really only basic trans-
A tip, be easy on your clutches, they are a big job to fix, oftentimes
you may only need to adjust the cable or spray degreaser on the
clutchplate to help prevent slipping.I wish I owned a 5spd rabbit, I
think that that was only offered on the cabrolias. Sunroofs, moonroofs
make any rabbit better, tip two.tip three brake servo's suck to replace.
tip four, "no officer I choose to drive this car because I like its
attributes, not your bad breath." Question, my moter whistles, why, and
what is it? happy trails, MJL

family from my Grandparents to my older sister to me. I plan to drive
it forever! It is a great car, especially for a student. I am trying
to find misc. parts to fix her up. I especially need a hood latch! If
you know of one let me know. Junk yards around here never have any
Rabbits, that is a great sign:)

I have a question: Why does only the right headlight of my '80 Rabbit
work but only the left highbeam works even after brand new lights
tested? Please help!

themadone   01/Apr/2001:08:38:56
I own midnite-blue 84 Rabbit GTI.It was a basket case when i got it.
The sun roof was partly open, and the roof caved in 4 to 6 inches.
front glass and lenses broken out. One wheel and tire gone the other
three icepicked. Some one took the fuel pump and battery. The steering
wheel melted and it had about 3 inches of water in the floor.I towed it
home with the steering wheel locked slightly turned to the left. that
was a trick. I have reworked it to streetable condition, and it is my
daily driver. It is one of the tuffest autos I have ever owned. Some
day soon I will start body work, and send some pics.

Hey, great site! Keep it nothing but Rabbits!! I am a factory VW tech
at a dealership but own nothing but A1 body cars- the only true
performance VWs- my current line-up includes '86 Cabriolet, '83
GTi, '84 Rabbit Wolfsburg, and a '81 Rabbit pickup. The '83 GTi and '81
pickup are true total rebuilds and are currently just shells- but they
will be honda-hungry performance beasts soon enough- if anyone has any
tech questions e-mail me at vwjetts@netzero.net- I have been building
these cars for a while now and would be happy to help you out. Thanks-
keep up the good work!!!

Hey! I bet I'm the only one to have a 1975 Rabbit with factory sunroof
left in the country. I recently purchased this car from the original
owner. Still bone stock with original 1.5l engine and AM radio. It
included a factory luggage rack which is still in great shape. The car
is almost rust free. This car is currently undergoing a full
restoration. Once completed she'll have a 2.0 Audi 80 engine with side
drafts. I'm keeping the outside stock looking for the old school look
with the exception of the euro bumpers, wheels and suspension. I have
owned at least eight rabbits and 3 caddy's and over 20 other VW's.
What an obscure car the '75 is. Many differences from the 76 and 77's.
Hope to post the completed project here someday! If any one has or
knows of other early Rabbits for sale, please email me! Great site!

Susan Hyde-Wick   02/Jan/2001:16:47:19
I acquired my Dad's 1977 yellow VW rabbit standard diesel when he died
close to 2 years ago. It was his pride and joy, and he kept it in
impeccable condition, inside and out. It developed a water leak, and
over the summer we constantly added water. We live in the Northeast,
and my daughter came back from college recently and drove it, and the
engine had cracked due to the water freezing-no antifreeze! I was
broken-hearted-not to mention broke! Now I am looking for a low mileage
engine that won't break the bank. Thanks so much!!!!!
